Muslims’ Representation in BMC Rises from 27 to 31; Congress Emerges as Top Gainer
Mumbai: Muslim representation in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has increased from 27 seats in 2017 to 31 seats in the 2026 civic elections, marking a significant rise in the community’s presence in the city’s civic body. Among the elected Muslim corporators, the Congress party has emerged as the biggest gainer.
As per election results, the Muslim community largely remained loyal to Congress, except in Govandi, where voters rejected the Samajwadi Party and extended support to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). Of the 31 Muslim corporators elected, 14 belong to Congress, seven to AIMIM, three to the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction), three to Shiv Sena (UBT), two to the Samajwadi Party, and two to Shiv Sena.
Despite apprehensions about vote splitting due to multiple Muslim candidates contesting in several wards, the community displayed improved cohesion and voted strategically, leading to a better overall performance compared to the 2017 elections.
Shiv Sena (UBT) also made gains among Muslim voters, with three of its nine Muslim candidates winning their respective wards. Notable winners include Saba Haroon Khan from Ward 124 and Zeeshan Changez Multani from Ward 62.
