Sufi Islamic Board Urges Peaceful, Spiritual, and Inclusive Observance of Moharram
MUMBAI / NEW DELHI — June 25, 2026 — The Sufi Islamic Board has issued an official statement outlining guidelines and a call to action for the solemn observance of Moharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. Emphasizing the core Sufi values of peace, tolerance, and universal brotherhood, the Board has urged Muslims across the nation to observe the period with deep spiritual reflection, strictly adhering to public safety and communal harmony.

Core Directives and Themes:
Spiritual Reflection Over Exhibitionism: The Board emphasized that Moharram, particularly the day of Ashura (the 10th of Moharram), is a time of mourning, introspection, and remembering the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions at the Battle of Karbala. The Board strongly advised against any practices or displays that could disrupt public peace or create misunderstandings among diverse communities.

Interfaith Harmony and Mutual Respect: In line with the teachings of Sufism, the Board called upon local community leaders to ensure that Moharram processions (tazias) are conducted along designated routes in cooperation with local administration and law enforcement. The Board urged volunteers to maintain open dialogue with neighbors of all faiths to ensure total communal harmony.
Focus on Charity and Public Service: Instead of extravagant displays, the Sufi Islamic Board recommends redirecting resources toward Sabeels (water distribution stalls), blood donation camps, and distributing food to the underprivileged, regardless of their caste or creed—mirroring the generosity of the martyrs of Karbala.
Prevention of Misinformation: The Board warned against the spread of provocative videos, unverified historical narratives, or divisive content on social media platforms during this sensitive period. It urged youth to utilize the month to study the true essence of Imam Hussain’s stand against tyranny and injustice.
”The message of Karbala is not limited to any one community; it is a universal lesson in standing up for truth, justice, and humanity. Let our remembrance of Imam Hussain be reflected through peace, charity, and service to society.”
